Washing Hair With Beer: Does it Work?

beer for hair

You've probably heard of people washing their hair with beer. Maybe you've even tried it yourself. Many people claim that the malted hops and alcohol in beer make it an effective rinse for giving your locks a little extra shine.

But does using beer actually work? Is it safe? And is there any science to back up these claims?

Let's take a look at the science behind washing your hair with beer...

Hair is made up of keratin, which contains amino acids. Amino acids are components of proteins. Human hair is very similar to gluten, another type of protein found in grains like barley and wheat. That's why it makes sense that using beer to wash your hair could give it a boost of protein and shine.

However, NOT all beers are the same. Alcohol content can vary from three to nine percent by volume. Even if you use a low alcohol beer to rinse your hair, the alcohol is still going to dry your hair and scalp. Using an intensely hopped IPA or double stout could be even worse.

The lactate in beer may also dry out your hair and scalp, especially if you use a darker brew with roasted barley and barley malt.

On the other hand, there are some ingredients in beer that could actually improve the health of your hair and scalp: vitamins like B6 and B12, as well as pantothenic acid and magnesium.

Does It Work?

There are no scientific studies that can claim that it does.

However, Beer can be used as a hair cleanser and conditioner because of the ingredients inside. The active ingredient in beer is alcohol, which helps strip oil from hair and stimulates blood circulation at the scalp. This allows for hair follicles to absorb proteins that strengthen the hair, resulting in strong locks. Malt also helps remove impurities from hair. Sugar prevents dandruff and gives hold to the beer's ingredients.

Beer is a good option for those who have dry, itchy scalp problems because of its moisturizing effect on the skin cells. If you're looking to grow your hair out quickly, this is a great method that will give you the results you want.

While beer is more than capable of cleaning your hair, it can also be drying if used on a regular basis. It's recommended to only use beer once every few weeks for this reason. As with any new product you wish to incorporate into your beauty routine, always do an allergy test first!

How to Use Beer on Hair:

  1. Shampoo your hair as normal and blot dry with a towel.
  2. Apply beer to the scalp area sparingly because it can make your hair sticky.
  3. Comb through it to spread down the length of your hair.
  4. Leave for 1-2 minutes then rinse out with water, again being careful not to get beer on your scalp.

This method can be done once or twice weekly and you should start seeing results after a few weeks! Bear in mind that everyone's hair is different so you may need to try a few beers before you find the perfect one for your hair.
