Skin Fasting: What Is It and Should You Do It?

skin fasting

Can skin fasting give you clearer skin? This controversial trend is making a buzz in the beauty industry because this method is a contrast to what we are accustomed to in terms of skincare. It may sound a bit crazy, but this new trend is gaining popularity for its ability to clear up the skin by skipping any skincare products and letting your skin recuperate from too many actives and chemicals. However, some may say that it might not be for everybody. Curious about what skin fasting is and if it’s right for you? Read on below!

What Is Skin Fasting?

Skin fasting is a skincare method of taking a break from all your skincare products and letting your skin breathe and reset. However, this method varies – some people eliminate all their skincare products for a few days while others slowly eliminate 1-3 products from their skincare routine and opt in for minimal skincare. Skin fasting is said to help your skin's natural oils balance out, which can lead to clearer, more radiant skin. This can be done anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Who Should Do Skin Fasting?

Generally speaking, skin fasting can be done by anyone who feels like their skin needs a reboot and a refresh from all the actives and skincare chemicals. However, it is most often recommended for people who have congested, dry, sensitive, or otherwise problematic skin. Slowly eliminating one product at a time will give your skin time to adjust and heal naturally. This will also give you an idea of which skincare product is doing more harm to your skin than good and therefore be put away in the trash.

Ultimately, the best way to determine whether skin fasting is right for you is to speak with a skincare professional. They will be able to take a detailed look at your skin and assess your overall health to determine whether this is the right choice for you.

How Skin Fasting Works

Skin fasting will depend on your preference. You may want to remove 1-2 skincare products at a time and leave only the basics such as a gentle face wash, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

For those who want to go full skin fasting, you need to completely stop using all your skincare products – no facial wash, moisturizer, toner, serums, or any cream. This can be done for 3-5 days or up to a couple of weeks. This will let your skin detox and cleanse on its own naturally.

However, if you try full skin fasting and remove sunscreen from your skincare routine as well, you might want to step away from the sun too much. Skin fasting is not a quick fix; it may take several days or even weeks for your skin to adjust to the new routine. But if you are consistent with it, you should start to see results within a few weeks.
